Semiconductor chip enterprises and the dream of Vietnamese chip autonomy

Having worked for several chip companies in Japan and the US, realizing the potential of the microchip industry, Luc Duc Tri returned home to start a business to nurture his dream with the VNCHIP Technology project.

In 2020, Luc Duc Tri (HCMC) launched the VNCHIP Technology project with 40 design engineers. He plans to open a research and development (R&D) division when he has accumulated resources with the dream of making Vietnamese chips.

Tri’s dream of proactively producing chips, as well as many businesses in this field, is a long road. Because in addition to good human resources, chip production requires costs for machinery, design copyrights, etc., up to millions of USD. Therefore, in the short term, to maintain operations and accumulate experience, Tri is looking for ways to connect and implement chip production projects of FDI enterprises. He shared that to reach the final step of having a factory and bringing the product to market, it is necessary to go through the step of researching IPs (Intellectual Properties) cores, until building the architecture and technical requirements of the chip. “This step is very difficult and costly, so it requires slow and steady steps,” Tri said.
